A
Day at the Races
Let's
Get Started
Penn
National would like your first visit to the races to be an
exciting and fun-filled experience. We also know that one
of the more challenging experiences for new racing fans is
understanding the terminology they encounter when first learning
about the many types of wagers offered, and how you go about
making your bets.
This step-by-step primer will provide you with information
that we hope will facilitate your introduction to pari-mutuel
wagering. Additional information on wagering is available
at Guest Service windows in all Penn National facilities.

PLACE: A place wager collects if your horse finishes
in either first or second position.
SHOW: A show wager collects if your horse finishes
in either first, second or third position.
DAILY DOUBLE: The challenge is to pick the winners
of two designated consecutive races. Traditionally, most racetracks
start their program with a daily double on the first and second
races. There may also be other daily doubles throughout the
racing card. The wager must be made prior to the start of
the first half of the daily double.
PICK 3: Bettors have to select the winners of a designated
set of three consecutive races. The wager must be made prior
to the start of the first part of the Pick 3.
PICK 4: Bettors have to select the winners of a designated
set of four consecutive races. The wager must be made prior
to the start of the first part of the Pick 4.
PICK 6: Bettors have to select the winners of a designated
set of six consecutive races. The wager must be made prior
to the start of the first part of the Pick 6.
PERFECTA: A wager in which you select two horses that
must finish first and second in that exacta order in a race.
TRIFECTA: A wager in which you select three horses
that must finish first, second and third in that exacta order
in a race
SUPERFECTA: A wager in which you select four horses
that must finish first, second, third and fourth in that exacta
order in a race
WAGERING
TIPS
It’s not always necessary to make a number of wagers
on a bet-by-bet transaction. There are several popular and
traditional methods of grouping together multiple wagers that
can be used when you make your bet at a pari-mutuel window,
or through the use of a self-service wagering terminal.
ACROSS – THE – BOARD
This is a combination wager that allows for a bet on a horse
to win, place or show. All three bets are combined into one
transaction. If your selection wins, you collect on all three
wagers; if your horse finishes second you collect on place
and show, and if your horses finishes third, you collect for
show.
BOXING
A popular form of betting that is simply a wager whereby
all possible combinations are covered when dealing with a
multiple number of horses in an exacta, trifecta, superfecta
or daily double.
For example:
A $1.00 exacta box on 2 and 4 would cost $2.00 and give
you a $1 ticket on 2-4 and a $1 ticket on 4-2
A $2.00 trifecta box on 2-4-5 would cost $12.00 and give
you a $2.00 ticket on the combinations 2-4-5, 2-5-4, 4-2-5,
4-5-2, 5-2-4, and 5-4-2.
Cost
For Multiple Horse Boxes
If you wish to box 3 or more horses in a $2.00 Exacta or Trifecta,
here's what it would cost:
| Number Horses |
Exacta |
Trifecta |
| 3 horses |
$12.00 |
$12.00 |
| 4 horses |
$24.00 |
$48.00 |
| 5 horses |
$40.00 |
$120.00 |
| 6 horses |
$60.00 |
$240.00 |
| 7 horses |
$84.00 |
$420.00 |
| 8 horses |
$112.00 |
$672.00 |
KEYING A HORSE
Bettors can make a “key” wager that will use
one or more horses in a specific position in an exotic wager.
For example:
A $1.00 exacta key on the #5 horse with the 1 and 2 would
cost $2.00 and give you a $1.00 5-1 exacta and a $1.00 5-2
exacta. If this wager was boxed, it would cost $4.00 and
also give you a $1.00 1-5 exacta and a $1.00 2-5 exacta.
A $2.00 trifecta key on the #5 horse with the 1, 2 and
3 would cost $12.00 and give you a $2.00 trifecta on the
combinations of 5-1-2, 5-1-3, 5-2-1,5-2-3, 5-3-1 and 5-3-2.
MAKING
A WAGER IS EASY!
(A) If you are at the track and making your
wager with a pari-mutuel clerk, here is all you need to say
when you go to the window:
1- The name of the track
2- The race number
3- The amount of the wager
4- Type of wager
5- Horse number(s)
AN EXAMPLE: “Penn National, fourth race, two dollars
to win on number three”
(B) Easy-to-use self-service
wagering terminals are located throughout the Penn National
Paddock Club and at all of our Off-Track wagering facilities.
Wagers can be made with vouchers, fast-bet cards, or cash
at these terminals. Additional information and instructions
on how to use self-service wagering is available at guest service windows in all Penn National Race
